Final Project: House Cats in the Club
A synthesis of previous projects in an interactive House music night club scene
I like the way the cat aimlessly walks around through the cylinders, turning tracks on and off, sort of like how my cat walks around on my keyboard and ends up playing a random track from Spotify every time! I wanted to incorporate my previous projects, and make something more visually appealing,
I had to choose the personal learning goals for this project which would create a complete experience, but I definitely wanted to keep exploring unity through this project. It feels more like a milestone, given the time I had to take recovering.
Trying to incorporate elements from my visualizer turned into an interesting pulsating background and floor, no idea how that happened. I love the serendipitous findings when you finally get to the exploring phase, alas this phase was 40 minutes before class. Ahh, I see once I built it, it looks like the unfinished visualizer element that it was… looked cool in game mode though:)
I’m glad that something got finished, and trying not to be too harsh on myself after this horrid quarter. I’d love to play with making house music in Chuck, and this platform could be such a cute place to try out different tracks together and find serendipitous combinations! I learned so much this quarter and really grew as a coder and person, trying not to judge myself too harshly/ compare to others.
Super helpful tutorial for the final iteration (I was stuck for so long trying to figure out animation before finding this!):
Previous Milestone work:
I am trying to build out a nightclub where one cat walks around turning tracks on and off, featuring the dancing cats and the smiley face audio visualizer from my previous assignments.
Learning Goals for this project if completed:
merge existing unity projects- exporting/importing asset packages
smiley visualizer on wall of night club
dancing cats on blocks w/ collision- the same concept to trigger tracks here
except cat walking around will trigger tracks on and off
so onEnter must toggle current state of track-playing /block-glow
toggle glow of squares on floor to indicate when track is playing
switch cameras during scene, implement first-person view of main cat
create new house music track to play, with a beat drop
I suffered from a concussion and trying to keep up with all the work I have this quarter, I keep getting migraines and awful nausea. I’ve spent many days working on this final project, hoping I could get somewhere to turn something in before the milestones, ending up with very little to show for it.
I first looked into building a forest scene to try specializing in audio and creating an educational experience about trees, since I taught a TAd for a class on trees last year. I was intimidated to try something entirely new, since morale/bandwidth is low and I didn’t want to try my luck with new features. I wanted to stick to what I already know how to do, communicating ints between unity and chuck. House music is also something I’ve looked into, and I’d rather stick to this theme.
As usual, I’m running into more roadblocks than successful moments. I had to download a different unity cat asset, as the other one didn’t respond to WASD movement script. I’m now stuck with an error that there are two audio listeners in the scene, but I don’t even see one. Have to stop here for the night.
